When did you start practicing yoga?
I started practicing power yoga at my gym around the year 2000 and then stopped when the teacher left. I took my first OHY class almost 12 years ago during the summer of 2007 and have been practicing this yoga ever since.
Have you ever competed before?
Yes. Regionals 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 (1st place for NH), and 2018-19 (coming up this March); Nationals 2012-13, 2017-18.
If yes, how was the experience?
I experienced a really nice sense of community. The events did not feel “competitive” but more like an opportunity to showcase the postures we’ve been practicing. It’s an opportunity to meet new people and to enjoy yoga with others who appreciate it as much as I do. Watching the routines of the other athletes is always an inspiration.
Why did you decide to compete? I decided to compete initially out of curiosity and also to give myself a fitness/athletic goal to work on in order to stay in shape, which I find is harder for me as I get older. The competition motivates and reminds me to stay focused on my fitness.
What’s your favorite part of the competition?
I don’t have a single favorite part. I enjoy all phases of the journey from early season training for the qualifying round to the competition itself to the celebratory dinner/beverages post-competition. Going through this process with my training group is always an amazing experience.
What’s your biggest takeaway from competing? I finish the competitive season with a sense of accomplishment from all of the preparation and a sense of appreciation for the opportunity to meet and mingle with so many yoga athletes, teachers, etc.
